Schenectady welcomes back US Tennis Association Eastern Section to Central Park

Aug 4, 2021

- The US Tennis Association's Eastern Section is returning to Schenectady's Central park with their Adult League Sectional Championships over 3 weekends in August and 2 weekends in September.

Beginning this weekend, Schenectady will welcome hundreds of amateur tennis players from throughout New York State, Northern & Central New Jersey, and Southern Connecticut. Men & women players will compete in age brackets of 18 & over, 40 & over, 55 & over and 65 & over. This marks a return to the area after the 2020 event was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year's event will operate at 50% capacity, due to the ongoing concerns of the pandemic, with the balance of the tournament being held at a facility downstate.

USTA Eastern Section Director of Competition, Julie Bliss Beal, stated, “The USTA Eastern Section is thrilled to be partnering with Discover Schenectady during our major flagship program event; Adult League Sectionals at Central Park. As an area native, it's exciting to see how Central Park continues to be a hub for tennis in the Capital region."

Todd Garofano, Executive Director for Discover Schenectady added; “We are excited to welcome the USTA Eastern Sectional Championships back to Schenectady this August & September. We are rolling out the red carpet while still following all CDC recommended guidelines to provide a safe environment for this tournament to go on" Garofano went on to say; “Having assets, like the tennis courts at Central Park, to draw tournaments and overnight visitation has a tremendous return on investment for our community. Over the course of these 5 weekends, this group will generate well over 1,000 room nights at 4 area hotels, bring much-needed business to our restaurants & bars and to our small businesses. We thank the tournament organizers for choosing Schenectady and wish all the players and spectators a wonderful stay here in Schenectady."
