The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Byway initiative are seeking to engage tourism stakeholders across the state and welcome participation in upcoming public meetings.
The Proposed Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Byway (HTURB) will be a vehicle for education, preservation, and economic growth. A byway fosters community pride, enhances residents’ quality of life, and preserves historic and natural assets. The HTURB will connect visitors to exceptional and inclusive experiences along its route and inspire visitors to be agents of change by elevating the authentic stories of Freedom Seekers on their journeys to emancipation.
Six public meetings are scheduled in locations across the state to share recommendations for the proposed Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Byway. The contents of the draft Corridor Management Plan (CMP), a New York Department of Transportation requirement for application to designate a proposed byway, will be presented by the byway committee to receive comments from stakeholders before the CMP is submitted this fall. Attendees will have the opportunity to respond to the recommended route, goals, and specific strategies for marketing, tourism, stewardship, signage, and other components of the plan.
