Announcement of Freedom 2027: New York’s Emancipation Bicentennial

In 2027, URCNYS will mark two centuries since New York State took the historic step to abolish the institution of slavery, an important moment in our centuries long journey toward a free and just nation. As we approach this moment in our shared history, URCNYS invites you to join us in honoring the bicentennial of New York’s abolition of enslavement. This marks not only a significant chapter in our state’s past but also a chance to reflect on the enduring legacies of oppression and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

In honor of this milestone, the Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State (URCNYS) is excited to announce this year’s launch of Freedom 2027, a three-year commemoration that will highlight the history of enslavement, the Underground Railroad (UGRR) movement, the abolitionists who fought for liberty through the UGRR, and the enduring legacies of these historical forces. We hope to engage residents from across the state in meaningful reflection, commemoration, and action through a series of programs, events, and educational initiatives designed by community groups and URCNYS leading up to the bicentennial on July 4, 2027.

URCNYS member organizations across New York State, along with many more historic, educational and community organizations, will offer an array of opportunities for all New Yorkers to engage with this history as part of Freedom 2027. To bring attention to this history and allow others to educate themselves, we will feature a curated collection of books, articles, and other resources that focus on the Underground Railroad movement, enslavement, abolition and emancipation. This digital platform will serve as a hub for knowledge and reflection on these critical historical issues.

Public programs, ranging from lectures to artistic performances, will be hosted in various communities over the next three years and we invite historic sites, churches, community groups, and other organizations to organize their own Freedom 2027-related events as well as share them with URCNYS to help expand their reach.

Freedom 2027 will culminate on July 4th, 2027, when we will come together in a symbolic and joyous act of unity as we propose a statewide ringing of the bells to mark this historic moment. We encourage historic sites, community groups, state and local offices, and individuals across the state to participate in this powerful tribute to freedom and the end of enslavement.

This bicentennial is more than a commemoration: it is a call to action. As we reflect on the profound contributions of those who fought for freedom, we also recognize the work that remains to ensure that liberty and equality are accessible to all. Through these efforts, we hope to spark important conversations about the history we share, the work of justice that continues today, and the future we strive to build together. URCNYS hopes you will join us in this statewide commemoration.

We look forward to celebrating this historic moment with you and your community, and we invite you to stay connected with Freedom 2027 throughout the coming years as we work together to honor and remember this crucial chapter in our history.
