UPDATE: Upstate NY 2022 Travel Statistics

NYSTIA's monthly virtual TPA meeting featured updates on the statistics we have been presenting regularly in your NYSTIA newsletter. Read below for details and links to their briefing decks.

Sally Donovan and James Sauter provided NYSTIA's TPA members with a look at upstate NYS travel trends based on mobile location tracking data. Some highlights:
  • Out-of-state visitors: Despite rising gasoline prices, 2022 driving distance was comparable to 2021 and pre-pandemic 2019, while the length of stay increased by 50% or more vs 2021 or pre-pandemic 2019 for every month except August. Repeat visitation is significantly higher (+50% to over +100%) vs pre-pandemic 2019 and showed gains vs 2021 Jan-June with a slight decline in the third quarter.
  • In-state overnight visitation: The percentage of interregional in-state travelers staying overnight in the region they visited soared in 2022, significantly outpacing both 2019 and 2021 levels!

Kellen Kruse looked at actual vs forecasted short-term rental booking data for upstate NYS from AirDNA. Some highlights:

  • Off-season pacing vs actuals: 2022 and 2021 data for mid-August through mid-November suggests that while advance booking vs actual booking data during summer months indicate advance planning, off-season travelers are much more likely to make decisions 'in-the-moment', requiring 'just-in-time' marketing strategies for destinations.
  • Growth in volume, but the rate of growth appears to be declining: The short-term rental market continues to grow year-over-year, but the growth rate seems to be declining.
