Last week’s Wednesday Webinar featured Brendan Woodruff, Director of Sustainability at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), who shared insights and actionable strategies for hosting more sustainable events at destinations and facilities across New York State.
Brendan spoke from multiple perspectives—as an event organizer, facility manager, and sustainability advocate—highlighting both visible and behind-the-scenes actions that make events more environmentally responsible and appealing to today’s eco-conscious travelers.
What Makes an Event Sustainable?
There’s no single definition, but sustainable events aim to reduce negative environmental impacts through measures such as waste reduction, renewable energy use, and local sourcing. Brendan noted that promoting sustainability can not only attract new visitors and clients but also cut costs and build a culture of environmental awareness across the state.
Key Strategies for More Sustainable Events:
-
Energy: Use renewable energy sources, efficient lighting, and building electrification where possible.
-
Transportation: Install or promote access to EV chargers, shuttles, and bike-friendly infrastructure.
-
Waste Reduction: Encourage reusable dishware, water refill stations, and digital programs instead of print materials.
-
Food & Beverage: Source locally, serve lower-carbon menu options, and compost food scraps.
-
Promotional Items: Offer experiential or eco-friendly giveaways like reusable bottles or native plant seeds instead of single-use items.
-
Communication: Publicize sustainability features on your website and signage, making the invisible visible to attendees.
Brendan also emphasized the importance of making sustainable choices the default, not an optional add-on. Destinations that clearly communicate their sustainability features and provide easy-to-find details—like availability of EV chargers or composting—are more likely to attract environmentally conscious organizations.
Key Takeaway:
Sustainability isn’t just good for the planet—it’s good for business. Event organizers are actively seeking destinations that align with their sustainability goals, and even small visible changes can make a lasting impression.
Huge thank you again to Brendan for sharing her time, as well as everyone who attended! Please see the slide deck for more detail, and the recording above.
