Visit Syracuse and GSHTA Sponsor 2019 Travel Unity Summit

As shared last week, this year's annual Travel Unity Summit — a forum for the discussion of diversity and inclusion in the travel space — will be held in Syracuse from October 5-7. Responding to the theme of “Cultivating Welcoming Communities," NYSTIA member Visit Syracuse, in partnership with the Greater Syracuse Hospitality and Tourism Association, is a sponsor.

Additionally, Danny Liedka, President and CEO of Visit Syracuse and a former Onondaga County legislator (District 7 from 2012–2017), is scheduled to address the assembled members of the tourism industry and stakeholders from academia, civil society and politics — all interested in exploring how the tourism and hospitality industry can proactively attract new visitors from diverse populations.

When asked about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tourism industry, Mr. Liedka commented "I think it is important to embrace diversity and find ways to help people feel comfortable in this great industry. Hospitality is what we are known for, and that should resonate with all of our employees and potential employees to encourage them to explore their career with this great family. Helping educate and grow our local workforce through tourism will create significant opportunity for all people. Our industry welcomes people from all cultures and economic status, and can be looked at as a gateway to career advancement. A prosperous tourism sector will go a long way towards quality of life in our region."
