Web Accessibility & ADA Compliance: accessiBe Presentation

May 27, 2022

During May's TPA Meeting, Bren Jobe from Corporate Communications presented a comprehensive overview on web accessibility and ADA compliance. Partnering with the automated web solution software accessiBe, he took us through the growing importance of web content accessibility guidelines and the easy steps you can take to make sure your website is accessible to all. You can download his full slide deck here, or read the shortened overview below.

Web Accessibility is a set of rules, behaviors, code standards, and design guidelines meant to explain how a fully-accessible website should look and function for people with disabilities. With a fifth of the world's population suffering from a disability, having a website that caters to their needs is important. These guidelines are called the web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG), with version 2.1 at the AA Level having been adopted as the web accessibility standard by governments all around the world.

Despite the sometimes confusing information regarding Web Accessibility guidelines around the web, the automated web solution accessiBe can help you meet these global standards. With a straightforward installation of just a single line of javascript code, accessiBe can make your website ADA and WCAG compliant and genuinely accessible to people with disabilities all within 48 hours.

Part of the legal requirements is that your website must include an Accessibility Statement. This is an explanation of some of the adjustments that were made to become compliant along with current contact information for users to provide feedback. Additionally, since it is a dynamic solution, accessiBe is continuously scanning the site for any new content and making the necessary adjustments to maintain compliance. The audit reports will be sent to you on a monthly basis, so you can keep up to date with what has been done behind the scenes on your website.

One of the biggest benefits of accessiBe is their Litigation Support Package. This means that if for any reason your site is ever called into question, their legal team will step in to handle the issue. To date, they claim to have never been sued successfully after the implementation of the application on a website.

It is important to note that every technology has its limitations. AI-powered remediation solutions can't remediate certain files (ex: Video, PDF, Excel, etc.) and they may not work on every site, but in the vast majority of cases, this technology provides a highly efficient solution to the complex issue of web accessibility. Again, compliance and accessibility are measurable and observable.
