This week’s Wednesday Webinar featured Erica Schneider of Parks & Trails New York and Morgan McClary of Montgomery County Tourism, who explored how communities across the state are turning New York’s long-distance trails into engines for local economic growth.
What the Trail Town Program Is:
Erica explained that the Empire State Trail Town Program provides technical assistance to communities along the Erie and Champlain Canal corridors, helping them enhance the visitor experience, support local businesses, and maximize the economic impact of trail tourism. Participating communities form committees, assess strengths and gaps, create action plans, and develop strategies to make their towns more bike- and pedestrian-friendly.
Why Trail Towns Matter:
Outdoor recreation is a major economic driver in New York. Statewide, outdoor recreation generates $34 billion in GDP and supports nearly 250,000 jobs. State parks alone attracted 78 million visits in 2021, producing $5.6 billion in visitor spending. Long-distance trails like the Empire State Trail attract multi-day cyclists, who spend significantly more than day visitors, bringing tangible benefits to gateway communities.
Key Components of a Trail Town:
Erica and Morgan outlined essential elements for welcoming trail visitors:
- Access to restrooms, drinking water, and overnight accommodations
- Safe, well-maintained trails and pedestrian connections to business districts
- Maps, signage, and digital tools to guide visitors
- Attractions, local food and beverage options, and a welcoming atmosphere
- Trail-friendly municipal policies and infrastructure, such as bike lanes and crosswalks
Lessons From Montgomery County:
Morgan shared practical examples: opening a visitor center near the trail, hosting events like Cycle the Erie Canal, installing signage and bike racks, and using social media to engage cyclists. She emphasized the value of intermunicipal partnerships, listening to trail users, and coordinating efforts across local government, businesses, and tourism partners.
Looking Ahead:
Applications for the Empire State Trail Town Program are open through February 16, 2026. Communities interested in technical assistance can access guidance to strengthen infrastructure, enhance visitor experiences, and boost economic development through trail tourism.
