It's all about quality of place for residents and visitors

The Lake Placid based Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) is the Destination Marketing and Management organization for Essex and Hamilton counties, including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake.

ROOST's mission is to enrich the lives of residents and visitors by creating a tourism economy that sustains itself over time - economically, socially and environmentally.

James McKenna is the President and CEO of ROOST. Mr. McKenna currently serves or has served on non-profit boards for organizations whose missions concern economic development, sports and tourism, environmental conservation, and philanthropic endeavors. Mr. McKenna is currently the co-chair of the North Country Regional Economic Development Council.

In 2022 Lake Placid completed a community driven long-term Destination Management Plan that balances the needs of community members, community organizations, area business and environmental sustainability with tourism efforts to improve the quality of place for residents and visitors.

Sustainable tourism, in its purest sense, is an industry which attempts to make a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate income and employment without overtaxing any resources -whether human, environmental or man-made. The ultimate goal of sustainable tourism is to improve the quality of life for residents.
