Candidacy Form: NYSTIA 2023 Board of Directors Elections

Greetings!

NYSTIA's Nominating Committee is seeking individuals interested in serving on the New York State Tourism Industry Association's Board of Directors. Will you put your expertise, enthusiasm and experience to work for the advancement New York State's tourism industry and your NYSTIA colleagues?

Board members should be prepared to actively engage with one (or more) NYSTIA committee(s) as well as participate in programs and events. Directors serve a three-year term and are eligible for re-election for a second term. Under NYSTIA Bylaws, eleven of NYSTIA's 21 board members must be a Tourism Promotion Agency (TPA). and no more than 25% of the board can be from any one tourism region in New York State. An excerpt of NYSTIA Board of Directors' elections process, terms, governance, role and responsibilities as detailed in NYSTIA's Bylaws and Policy & Procedures documents is available for your review by clicking HERE.

Each year seven (7) of NYSTIA's twenty one (21) board members complete their three (3) year term of service. In 2023, five (5) board members are completing their first board term and have chosen to run for a second term; two (2) board members are not eligible for another term, and there is one board vacancy (partial term) to be filled.

There will be at least three (3) non-TPA board openings available to new board candidates in the 2023 election. Candidate attributes that will be considered by the nominating committee include:

  • Engagement: Is the candidate already actively engaged as a member, serving on a committee, and/or participating in NYSTIA programming?
  • Member Type: Bylaws guidelines dictate that the Board of Directors consist of a balance of TPA (11 directors) and non-TPA (10 directors) members. All three of the vacancies in 2023 are non-TPA board seats. Otherwise underrepresented membership categories are desirable for the board to reflect membership composition.
  • Geographic Distribution: Is the candidate from one of New York State's eleven tourism regions that is numerically underrepresented on the NYSTIA board? (Long Island-0; Chautauqua/Allegheny-1; Catskills-1, Thousand Islands-1; Central NY-2; Capital/Saratoga-2; Greater Niagara-2; NYC-2)
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: NYSTIA's commitment to purposeful action around diversity, equity, and inclusion is also a factor in candidate selection. Is the candidate a member of a segment of New York State's population that is underrepresented on the NYSTIA Board of Directors?
  • Expertise: Does the candidate have specialized knowledge and/or professional skills that will contribute to the board's efficacy? (Note: board members cannot have a grant-related vendor relationship with NYSTIA)

If you are interested in being considered for one of the NYSTIA Board openings, I urge you to complete the Candidate Profile (see below) by August 25, 2023. The Nominating Committee will review the applications and develop a recommended slate of candidates to present to general membership at the Annual Meeting on September 14, 2023.

Please direct any questions, concerns or comments to Bob Provost - email Bob@nystia.org; text or call (518) 956-1241.

Thank you!
